The warm, soothing steam of your cup of hot chocolate circulated through your hands, a pregnant silence overcoming both you and Marco. You raised your legs for your knees to be pressing against your chest as your (E/C) slits regarding the partially clear night sky. You sighed softly, orbs glancing down to your hot drink and moving the cup for the liquid to move in circular motions. "So..." you began, your top teeth grazing your lower lip in anticipation, eager to break the stiff silence between you two. "How... How have you been?"

The freckled man offered you a gentle smile with a small nod. "Decent... I've been studying engineering," he responded. "and I'm going to have a minor in business." You hummed in acknowledgement, shooting him a smile and taking a sip from your hot beverage.

"That's good." You empathized, feeling the scorching, sweet drink slide down your throat. Another silence overcame the both of you, the only sounds filling your ears were the gentle chirps of crickets and the light breeze that hit you, causing a chill to run down your spine.

"What about you?"

"Hm?" you craned your head, (E/C) eyes peering into the copper eyes of Marco. "Oh... I've been good, I guess," you shrugged, your gaze shifting to the grass below you. "Studying education with a minor in English."

"Ah, so a teacher?" he gave you his signature, glowing smile - oh, that smile had never changed in the past few years - that always melted your heart no matter what state you were in. "You're pursuing your dreams, (Y/N)."

"Yeah..." you breathed. "My dreams..."

You raised the cup to your lips, savoring the liquid and humming in acknowledgement. You licked your upper lip in attempt to swipe stray drips from your refreshment and gawk at the soothing night sky above you. It was a somewhat clear night, the stars striving to peak and shine through the thick clouds that began to overlay the shadowed firmament. The crescent moon, however, flickered and gleam with pride through the haze above.

"Remember we used to do this?" Marco cocked his head to the side. His soft, chocolate hues observed you adoringly, and you couldn't help the feeling in your chest that fluttered and pumped against your insides. "When... we used to date?"

"Mm, I remember," you nodded and grinned at the memory of the two of you snuggling against each other, your head laid on his chest and young, innocent orbs staring at the night sky and pointing at various constellations all evening on top of the rolling hills. "Old man Pixis used to kick us out after staying out here too long."

He chuckled, drinking his hot beverage and nodding. "Does he still live in that old barn?"

"Yep. And still hitting the whiskey."

Clouds continue to emblazon the sky, and eventually thunder rolled in the background. Marco, now worried, knitted his eyebrows and stood up. "We should head back home soon. It's going to storm."

You reached up and grasped his hand. "Uh, wait!" Marco slid his head to the side. You blushed by now, and had to hold yourself back from spilling a series of stutters. "C-Can we stay a little longer? It's..." you coughed. "Um, just for a little bit? The breeze is... nice."

The man smiled and nodded modestly, seating himself back down; though he was closer to you, shoulders touching and the backs of your hands briefly grazing skin. You frowned, chewing on the inside of your cheek and uncomfortably repositioning yourself on the ground as you sat this close to this man you once - no, you still love, and you were concerned, wondering if he still felt the same way about you.

"Have you found someone?" the question caught you off guard. You turned and faced Marco with wonder. He wasn't looking at you. More-so, he found the grass strangely interesting at that moment, and he was thankful that it was dark out for you wouldn't see the blush staining his cheeks. "A-After we broke up...?"

You shook your head, albeit a bit too quickly. "No," you responded. "I haven't..." Marco nodded with that response, and a sigh of relief left him. You noticed that, and that little gesture he made sent your heart doing back flips. "Wh-What about you?"

In return, the freckled man shook his head with a smile. "Neither have I."

"Ah."

"Yeah."

You frowned, wondering how it became like this. It was stiff, floundered, hollow between you two. It was a good thought at the time; the both of you thought it was for the best if you were to break the relationship off after graduation, moving onto your separate ways and keep your focus in tact with your studies. Although you two were engaged with classes and work, the emptiness in your hearts never ceased. Your lips parted, sucking in a breath to ponder on the question that has been circling in your mind for as long as you could remember. Marco noticed this, and his hand instinctively reached to your hand and twirled his fingers around your own.

"Are you okay?" his voice was soft, gentle, caring as it has always been. Now that you think about it, you never recalled a time where Marco raised his voice at anything or anyone. Frantically, you nodded and smiled, squeezing his hand.

"I'm fine," you returned the kind gesture. "It's... It's just that..." you furrowed your eyebrows in concentration, meeting his copper hues in your (E/C) ones. "Marco, I... I still lo-"

Your voice cut off mid-sentence, feeling drops of rain fall on your skin. You squeaked in surprise, head drifting up to view the clouds above. "It's starting to rain," Marco stated, standing and pulling you up. "We should take shelter. It'll probably get worse!"

"Y-Yeah," you agreed in a shaky voice, hand still in his. "We need to take cover for a little bit. Let's head to Pixis's farm!"

"Do you think he'll let us in?"

You shook your head. "No, but," you smiled, starting to run down the hills with him, fleeing from the storm. "he's probably asleep by now! We can always hide in his stable, instead."

It was a few minutes away, but it felt like centuries getting there. Your mind was fogged with the smooth touch of Marco, his gentle smile as you two ran, how the lightning illuminated his structure and flashed against his spectacles. Your heart sped by a thousand miles per hour, and you needed to tell him.

You needed to tell him now.

Closing the door of stable, the soft scent of haystacks filling the wooden building, the both of you sigh in relief as you examine each others drenched body. Marco was the first to laugh, taking a few strands of your sopped, (H/C) hair and squeezing it. "Your hair's completely wet!"

You snorted, reaching up on your toes just to ruffle his own dark locks. "And look at you! Your hair is soaked, and your glasses."

Marco only laughed, slipping his black lenses off to wipe them against his shirt in attempt to clean them. "This has been pretty... eventful, right?"

"Yeah, it has..." sighing, you rested your head against the wooden walls of the stable, and Marco next to you as well. "Marco, about what I was going to say..." his attention was captured now. He put his glasses back on, pushing it up to the bridge of his nose and tossing you a smile. You quivered, chewing on your lower lip and took a deep breath. "Marco, I still love you."

Thunder rolled in the background, lightning enlightening the stable. You tore your gaze away from the man, afraid that if you were to stare at him any longer, you would break down in broken sobs. You expected a blatant response from him, rejecting your affection for him and apologizing to you. You expected him to move on, to say the least. You expect him to find a better lover in the future, to work harder, or perhaps not even find love at all and stay single for the rest of his life, leaving you behind in his memories and his memories only.

"(Y/N)," he whispered. Slowly, you turned your head to meet his peering, chocolate orbs. He had a smile on his face, as usual, and his hand continued to squeeze yours. "You don't know how long I've waited to hear those words."

Your lower lip quivered and curled into a smile, tears glistening in your (E/C) eyes. "Wh-What?" you leaned closer. "Really...?"

His free hand reached to push a curl of hair out from your forehead, and thumb reached to the corner of your eye to smudge the tear away. The two of you leaned in at the same time, lips brushing against each other in a prolonged kiss that you have been waiting for years. His lips were smooth, tender, and you relished the way they molded perfectly against your own. The feeling of him has never changed, and you have never been so overjoyed.

Marco reluctantly pulled away, forehead on top of yours. He beamed at you, pulling you close to him. His arms wrapped around your waist, his head on top of your shoulder while he inhaled your scent and savored the feeling of you once more. "Yes..." he breathed. "Really."
